Instant Messaging is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to communicate online using a computer. You can talk online using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) with a microphone and also include video if you want. Many of the services offer integrated features such as a whiteboard, file sharing, and application sharing. They are quite robust, easy to use, and dependable. You can quickly see if one of your contacts is online and chat with them. I have used instant messaging quite effectively for students to catch me online for quick questions or problems. Students could also use instant messaging to meet online with other students. It is certainly an option you could include. Besides chatting online, you can also usually transfer files and do application sharing.
